Hello Friends! April is almost here and going to be one busy, hectic month for Kara and I as we finish up the semester! We are still planning on posting one informational post and one recipe a week, but it will likely be shorter than usual and the recipe may be more of an idea for cooking than specific measurements, etc. We will still be posting pics of what we are cooking and what’s new on Instagram @sweetongreens, Facebook Sweet on Greens and Twitter @sweetongreens so don’t miss us there. Stayed tuned also this month as we are hoping to have a guest blogger 🙂 Going along with the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers” we will be back in full force come May with our typical Monday post and Thursday detailed recipes.
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
And now for some exciting news! I just signed up for a vegetable CSA for the second year in a row. Last year, I bought a half share (the picture above shows one week’s worth) from a local farm, a few miles from my house, and received a tote full of fresh, local, organic vegetables each week. And let me tell you it was awesome! Every Monday night felt like my birthday, July through October, as I opened the tote to find different vegetables depending on what was in season. The produce was sooo fresh, delicious and a very reasonable price. Not to mention, supporting local farming felt great. I can’t say enough good things about the CSA last year and I am hoping for the same this year. I could go on and on about all the terrific reasons to participate in CSAs but for lack of time these websites will fill you in.
Check out this easy-to-read website from localharvest.org for more information, all the advantages of being a share holder, what you should know before you purchase, finding a CSA near you, etc .
This site has even more info from the USDA National Agriculture Library and has lots of sites for you to look through.
When my first tote of veggies arrives (likely at the beginning of July, but of course weather/season dependent) I will be sure to post pics and will be bragging about the amazing, local produce I receive! Check out what CSA opportunities are in your area and give it a try this year!
